Claire Bissett

Clinical Specialist

Claire Bissett started Southbourne Physiotherapy as a sole trader from her home in 2000. The business quickly built through word-of-mouth recommendations and outgrew the one room. In 2006, the business relocated to its current premises and took on a number of self-employed associates. The business became a limited company in 2009. The business was initially providing traditional musculoskeletal (MSK) services but has now become a thriving multi-specialism clinic. While MSK services remain the core offering, the clinic also provides neurological rehabilitation, acupuncture, vestibular rehabilitation, domiciliary care, women’s health, massage and hand therapy. The clinic is well known in the community and prides itself on offering a quality and personal service. The business has a manned reception at all times.

The business was acquired by Atlas Health Care in 2023.

Claire did her physiotherapy training at Guys Hospital in London, qualifying in 1990.

She was then employed by Southend Hospital to do her junior rotations. Claire

was Clinical Specialist in Hydrotherapy for 10 years – responsible for all the training of junior staff and students in this specialty.

Claire went on to do a Diploma in Sports Medicine in 1994 which led to her work in various sports. This includes:

  • Charlton Athletic Youth Team for 2 seasons
  • Southend Rugby Club Physio for 3 seasons
  • Saracens Colts for 1 season
  • Eastern Counties Rugby Colts for 2 seasons
  • British Gymnastics (Men’s Team) 2 Olympic Cycles – London 2012 and Rio 2016

During this time Claire also worked in private practice at several clinics in the East Essex area.

In 2000 Claire carried out an Ergonomics Course and as a result worked in Occupational Health for 2 years with Ford Motor Company and Unilever Best Foods.

She established Southbourne Physiotherapy in July 2000 where she continues to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and sports injuries. She has a particular interest in running related injuries including gait analysis and technique correction.

Claire is due to retire in February 2024 but will continue at the clinic for 2 days a week for her existing clients.
